Gustav Klimt was a world-famous Austrian painter who became the public voice of Modern Art in Vienna. Being famous for his mesmerizing, gold-accented masterpieces like The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1903 – 1907). Where he made his mark by bridging together both worlds of traditional history painting and bold/modern expressionism. Before becoming the symbol for historical expressionism styles, Klimt began his artistic exploration as a highly conventional decorator painting murals for grand public buildings. Though he became inspired to do more with his artwork from his conventional mural work. A great amount of his inspiration was derived from the art of gold engravings and the glittering mosaics of ancient churches. Where he had entered his famous “Golden Phase,” as he applied actual leafing directly into his canvases like The Kiss to create his well known shimmering and timeless pieces.

Renouncing his wealthy lifestyle, he drew inspiration from the inspirations of the natural world. His life story sparked a massive shift in the art world. Wassily Kandinsky (from 1866 – 1944)
Kandinsky was a very well known painter who was the large inspiration behind modern abstract art. He was known for his famous art works such as Odessa Port (1898), Composition VI (1913), and Colorful Life (1907). Before he completely transformed modern art, Wassily Kandinsky was an associate law professor in Moscow. That all changed in 1896 when he saw a painting from Claude Monet’s Haystacks series. Where he was stunned by the how vivid colors could evoke powerful feelings without being hyper-realistic. And that made him trade his legal work for paint-brushes at age 30 where moved to Munich to start art school from scratch. Kandinsky experienced a condition named synethesia, that was a rare sensory condition where the brain links different senses together. For him, looking at color triggered specific musical sounds, while listening to music sparked vivid visual shapes and hues. Believing art should express the soul rather than only mimic nature, he began painting floating circles, sharp, triangles and dynamic lines into his artwork – essentially inventing Modern Abstract art.
